The next day the bungalow vibrated with silent recrimination. It was in neither Ellen Chandler’s nor Marco Cohen’s nature to make what they called a scene. Marco Cohen always stood ready for an intellectual quarrel, but in private life, about private matters, and to a woman not his intellectual sparring partner, to the companion of his bed and the mother of his children, or rather, of his child—no, he would not lift his voice. Diane del Greco couldn’t help but notice, however, that he had—ever since she’d insisted on leaving Levi with his parents to come to Oceanopolis—begun to look at her every so often, when he thought she wasn’t looking back, with contempt. As for Ellen Chandler, she would do to anyone what she had done to her parents, if they could not understand or appease her: she would leave them behind.
