Chapter 10. | The Marriage of Heaven and Hell
The first time Simon Magnus went to a comics convention, midway through the Marsh Man run, Ellen Chandler was impressed by the line of about 100 people who formed to get the author’s signature on their floppy woodpulp pamphlets. On that occasion, Simon Magnus wore a loose white linen shirt and tight black jeans while the other writers shuffled in worn loafers and T-shirts. The second time, after the publication of Fools’ Errand, a mob of about 1000 in their teens and 20s chased Simon Magnus and Ellen Chandler down a corridor, some of them apparently eager only to touch the hem of Simon Magnus’s garment—a baby-blue suit, purchased for the occasion. Simon Magnus and Ellen Chandler had discussed the writer’s wearing a dress to the second convention, but, as this would blatantly align Simon Magnus with The Fool and all The Fool’s heinous crimes, they decided against.
