“Aren’t you taking advantage of people?” Jacob Morrow asked her on the second night of their acquaintance. They had decided to take a night walk after their classes—including their first session of “Studies in the Graphic Novel” with Simon Magnus—and were halfway down “cardiac hill” from their dorm, headed toward the Cathedral.
She had sent him the link to her Undergirl channel where she had been for over two years—since the summer before she left for college—coaching people on how properly to express their wishes to the universe and thereby manifest their desires in the flesh. Her intervention in the market, a literal and figurative darkness, filming in low light and making reference to the more morose classics of the literary and philosophical canon, this as opposed to her pink and chirpy “girl, you got this” rivals, leant an aesthetic appeal to what Jacob Morrow, himself reared by a woman who ran a small business devoted to the aesthetic, might otherwise have regarded as a scam, a grift, a fraud, a hustle, and, when all was said and done, a confidence game.
