Once the investigators stopped Jessica Morrow from strangling her, once follow-up pre-natal appointments were scheduled, once she asked Simon Magnus, “Are you my father?” and Simon Magnus replied, “I honestly don’t know,” her mother showed up to the University hospital, took her in an enveloping perfumed embrace that for once she didn’t resist, and—albeit not before looking Simon Magnus up and down, from brown wingtips to combed-back thinning hair, and saying with a little growl of appreciation, “Look at you, a professor now, la-de-dah!”—drove her home.
