The gun felt heavy, heavier than it could really have been down in the pocket of his World War II “Ike” jacket. Alone in the elevator, the elevator where he’d met her, where the box of her books had broken open, he pressed the number for her floor before it could begin descending to the bottom. He had to see her one more time. It was the middle of the afternoon during classes, so the hallway was empty. Only one girl passed him, shuffling with a hangover to the bathroom in her leopard-print slippers. She smelled of stale cigarettes. She must have been too dazed to wonder at his martial dress.
